SoCLA Webinar - "Construction law under the microscope: health of the industry, standard form contracts and residential perspective” Key Themes and Issues

Wednesday 24 November 2021 at 5:00 pm AEDT

Online webinar presented by Phillip Greenham, Dr Matthew Bell, Professor John Sharkey AM and Wayne Jocic.

In this webinar, our speakers will cover three discrete and interesting topics.

First, the authors will provide a recap on the key findings and themes emerging from The University of Melbourne’s, "The Health of the Australian Construction Industry Research Report", published late last year (available for free download via www.law.unimelb.edu.au/constructionlaw).  This report provides a valuable overview of the state of the industry and guidance in relation to key issues for further consideration particularly as we emerge from the impact of COVID.

Second, Phillip Greenham has recently published the International Compendium of Construction Contracts (available with a discount for SoCLA members via this link). This provides a digest from colleagues around world about how the most commonly used construction project contracts are applied in various countries. Phillip will take us through a number of common issues and themes and his thoughts on areas for further consideration.

Third, Dr Matthew Bell has recently co-authored Residential Construction Law with Philip Britton and specialist contributors Dr Deirdre Ní Fhloinn and Kim Vernau.  The book offers a systematic and analytical overview of the legal framework for residential construction in a comparative context across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It is an accessible guide to the existing law for residents and construction professionals (and their legal advisers), but also charts a course to further, meaningful reforms of the legal landscape for residential construction around the world.

Matthew will discuss some of the key themes and issues emerging from the book and will also touch on future directions. More information about the book is available via this link and SoCLA members can obtain a code for a special discount via this link.

There will also be time at the end of the webinar for attendees to ask questions.
