Opportunities for appointment to building and plumbing boards 2019

The Minister for Planning is seeking expressions of interest from Victorian’s interested in being appointed to the:

•           Building Appeals Board;

•           Building Advisory Council;

•           Building Regulations Advisory Committee;

•           Plumbing Advisory Council; and the

•           Victorian Building Authority Board.

Expressions of interest open March 2019.

The Society offers the Brooking Prize annually for the best essay submitted in the field of construction law.

It is named after The Hon Robert Brooking AO QC in recognition of his Honour’s pioneering contribution to the study and practice of construction law in Australia.

Papers are now invited for the 2019 Brooking Prize

Entries must be received in WORD or PDF format by 4:00 pm Sydney time on 5 June 2019.

SoCLA is pleased to announce the 2019 National Conference will be held in Perth at The Westin on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August 2019. 

Welcome drinks will be held on the evening of Thursday 1 August 2019.

The conference theme is “Doing it Overseas - the legal tips and tricks for taking Construction Smarts to foreign jurisdictions”.

Our latest "Let's Connect" submission (by Maike Barton) is "The Impact of the Government Procurement Agrement to Procurement Laws in Australia".  This paper analyses the impact of the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA) within the World Trade Organisation (WTO), procurement legislation in construction law in Australia. This paper proposes a study of the relationship between the entities (Australian Government and GPA) outlining how and why the GPA affects the Commonwealth Procurement Rules (CPR’s).  Members can download the paper from the Resources section.

Our latest "Let's Connect" submission is  'Subjective objectivity - As built critical path analysis". Submitted by Tommy Wakefield-Smith, this paper looks at the different methods of delay analysis defined by the Delay and Disruption protocol 2nd edition, some of their issues, and ‘subjective objectivity’ and bias by reference to Nobel Prize winner Dr Daniel Kahneman and his work on ‘Judgement Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases’.

The Society of Construction Law Australia has been invite to participate in the Building Ministers Forum’s discussions on the Building Confidence Report, “Building Confidence – Improving the effectiveness of compliance and enforcement systems for the building and construction industry across Australia”.

The Society would like to hear members’ comments on the report generally and the recommendations specifically.  To enable them to be collated in time for the discussion members are requested to provide their comments by 6 August 2018.
